At Heatherdale, our aim is to provide a temporary stop-over for children at risk, and we endeavour, wherever possible, to reunite children with their parents, or with extended family members. We believe that it is best for the child to return to his/her home of origin and not to become institutionalised – an approach that has gained widespread acceptance in the child care sector in recent times.
With this in mind, our social workers engage with the families of our children right from the start – providing them with vital support services and parenting skills programmes, and helping them address their problems and challenges. ·Our overall aim is to reunite them with their children once the problems in the home have been addressed.
Once have achieved a successful reunification, it is important that we make sure things continue to run smoothly. Therefore, we provide follow-up and support services for children and their families for a period of time after the children have left our care.
While we try to ensure the children in our care are able to live lives one in which they are not dependent on institutions, we also make it clear that they can depend on us as a safe haven that they can return to at any time in the future – should the need arise.
